LearningRx Celebrates 20 Years of Brain Training

November 25, 2024

November 25, 2024, COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado— Educators and scientists alike used to believe that a person’s I.Q. was fixed. Essentially, you worked with what you were born with.

Luckily, a pediatric optometrist from Appleton, Wisconsin,  who struggled with dyslexia himself since childhood, dared to ask the question, “What if we could improve the way people think and learn?”

That question laid the groundwork for Dr. Ken Gibson to create a brain training program whose benefits have been verified in more than 40 studies and published in 18 peer-reviewed journals. This unique cognitive training methodology grew out of the following concepts:

  1. A person’s intellect is based on a set of underlying cognitive skills, including visual and auditory processing, logic and reasoning, memory, attention, and processing speed.
  2. By strengthening those skills, a person can learn easier and faster.
  3. Our I.Q. can change – higher or lower – based on the strength of our underlying cognitive skills. Researchers have been able to prove this phenomenon both empirically through a student’s real-life experience and objectively via functional MRI mapping.

LearningRx Was Born

Dr. Gibson’s next question was, “How can we help as many people as possible using these principles?” As a result, he founded LearningRx in 2004 to create a network of franchise locations where his cognitive skills training would be accessible to exponentially more minds in need.

Today, LearningRx is the largest one-on-one brain training company in the world.

Past and present students, parents, trainers, community partners, and LearningRx leaders recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of the first franchise location in Colorado Springs with brain training demonstrations, games and prizes, and refreshments. There was even a 33-foot brain balloon! Nearly 200 people joined together in appreciation for how LearningRx has improved their quality of life and the trajectory of their potential.

Research Drives Success

Since 1985, LearningRx reports it has helped sharpen the underlying cognitive skills of more than 135,000 people, including children, adults, soldiers, athletes, and seniors.

This success is not just anecdotal. LearningRx has performed extensive research through The Gibson Institute of Cognitive Research to both validate the program’s effectiveness and gather feedback for continuous improvement. The results of this ongoing research is updated regularly at https://www.gibsonresearchinstitute.org/, including insights on:

  • ADHD and Learning Disabilities
  • Traumatic Brain Injuries
  • Improving Memory, Processing Speed, and Reasoning Skills in Older Adults
  • Best Practice for Delivery Methods
  • Improving the Accuracy of Assessments

LearningRx has been shown to support significant gains in every cognitive skill for children and teens with learning struggles:

  • I.Q. Score: average gain of 21 points
  • Logic & Reasoning: average gain of 28 points
  • Working Memory: average gain of 13 points
  • Long-term Memory: average gain of 28 points
  • Processing Speed: average gain of 13 points
  • Auditory Processing: average gain of 13 points
  • Visual Processing: average gain of 11 points

This research elevates humanity’s collective knowledge and understanding regarding the malleability of intelligence and cognition. Perhaps more importantly, program graduates report improved confidence and self-esteem, stronger relationships, better self-discipline, and more cooperative behavior. In short, LearningRx provides a better quality of life.
