Julie Su Confirms She is Unqualified to Serve as Labor Secretary During Confirmation Hearing

Hearing highlights lack of business experience; Su dodges questions on views of joint employment and California AB 257, despite touting family franchise business

WASHINGTON – The International Franchise Association (IFA) today released the following statement on Julie Su’s confirmation hearing to serve as U.S. Secretary of Labor before the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP). Su was questioned on her history of bias toward franchising, her stance on the joint employer relationship, and her lack of experience:

“Today’s hearing reinforced how Julie Su is an outside-the-mainstream California regulator who is unqualified to run the Department of Labor,” said Michael Layman, IFA senior vice president of government relations and public affairs. “Su made clear she does not have command of key issues such as joint employer, independent contractor, and the California FAST Act – fundamental to hundreds of thousands of small businesses and independent entrepreneurs. Small businesses deserve a balanced Secretary of Labor to run the Department, who will treat small businesses as partners, not adversaries. Julie Su has unfortunately failed that test. IFA urges members of both parties to oppose this nomination."

IFA’s additional concerns with Su’s history are available here.
