How Colorado and Texas Franchises are Lifting our Community and Workforce

The International Franchise Association (IFA) recently held Open For Opportunity Roadshows in Denver, Colorado and Dallas, Texas. The franchise events were held in partnership with the Denver Franchise Business Network, and was hosted by Denver-based law firm Polsinelli.

The Open For Opportunity panel composed of a number of franchising leaders, including IFA President and CEO Matthew Haller, as well as certified franchise executives William G. Hall, Catherine Monson, and Tim Williams. The group discussed how franchise opportunities contribute to the economies of the Denver community and workforce, while Haller shared recent franchise developments including the defeat of David Weil’s nomination for Wage and Hour Administrator, IFA’s latest economic and labor study numbers, and issues and challenges facing franchisors and franchisees.

Colorado’s economy is recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic much like the rest of the country, but new data from the first quarter of 2022 looks promising. According to the Colorado Secretary of State, more than 43,000 new businesses filed with the secretary of state over the first quarter of 2022, including a number of franchises. This activity helped the unemployment rate drop to 3.7 percent for the first quarter of 2022, down 0.5 percentage points from the fourth quarter of 2021.

After Colorado, the panel traveled to Polsinelli’s Dallas, Texas to share the franchise insights and highlight the impact of franchise opportunities on the local Texas economy, community, and workforce.

According to Texas A&M research, franchising has helped the Texas economy has returned to growth, with its year-over-year unemployment rate falling by 6.1 percent in 2021.

  • Dallas added 132,400 jobs, a 5.1 percent increase

  • Houston added 68,000 jobs, a 2.3 percent increase

  • Austin had an employment increase of 76,600, a 7 percent increase
