| Franchisee Motivation Survey Report |
Gowlings’ Franchise and Distribution National Practice Group, recently commissioned a national survey of Canadian franchisees to uncover information regarding their motivations to invest in a franchise. The study uncovered the attitudes and behaviours pertaining to the following: A telephone survey of 400 franchisees was conducted throughout Canada, wherein the respondent was the owner or senior manager who was the primary decision-maker regarding the franchise acquisition. The study found that 38 per cent of new franchisees are between 35 to 44 years old. Clearly, purchasing a franchise is a career choice and not just a stepping stone to retirement. Franchisors should consider emphasizing the longevity of their franchises, their renewal policies and on-going support as a potential means of enhancing a franchisee’s net worth.

Joe Francis, An American Entrepreneur |
Franchising was in its infancy when a charismatic and courageous entrepreneur shrugged off analysts claims, "you'll never be able to franchise hair salons." Joe Francis proved them all wrong. He had a one-chair barber shop in 1957, and in l963 founded The Barbers, Inc. which he grew to 1,000 franchise salons world-wide. His corporation was in business for 36 years, and traded on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange. The Barbers were rated as one of America's very top franchise companies in national publications such as Forbes, Nation's Business, Venture, Success, Corporate Report, etc. This IFA Entrepreneur of the Year swept up anyone willing to join him as he engendered an extraordinary work ethic in others, and achieved his lifetime goal "to make poor men rich." Doing business under the brand names of The Barbers, Cost Cutters, City Looks, and We Care Hair, Joe's franchise system was rated Minnesota's number one publicly-held company for the most women in leadership roles, such as corporate officers, Board directors, and franchise owners. Joe's sweat equity endeared him to many, and franchisees became fiercely loyal; some franchisees stayed with Joe for over 30 years, and several passed their businesses to their children. |
